Chapter 4

Sunday, no word from Jackson as Valentine stared at his iCoffin hoping to hear from the boy soon. The vampire had already spent a good amount of time trying to call him, leaving him voice messages until the phone indicated that Jackson’s voicemail box was full. He also sent him a good amount of texts apologizing and asking for his response. Hours went by until finally Valentine let out a sigh and gave up waiting for a reply. At this, his cloud posse appeared.

“So I take it that your night didn’t go so hot?” the plump one asked. Valentine shook his head, putting his elbows on his knees and resting his chin on his hands in a disappointed pout. He thought about how he literally dragged Holt back to the car by his shirt collar, threw him into the car, and drove him back home before speeding back towards the mansion around 2 that morning. He had tossed and turned in his coffin, unable to find sleep waking up at an early 2 in the afternoon, while the sun was still high outside. Thank Goth for the thick black curtains he had hung up over the window.

“But you got to talk to Holt, right?”

“At least you told him everythin’.” The other two clouds added. Valentine rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, and I had a feelin’ Holt would give me a negative response, but I hadn’t considered him makin’ a scene and nearly pushin’ me to the edge of destroyin’ him.” Valentine explained with another heavy sigh to follow. “He’s just like Edward Hyde used to be.”

“That cat was no good.” The plump cloud commented.

“Sleazy.” The tall one said.

“Slimey.” The plump cloud agreed.

“Wore a top hat nicely though.” The middle one added, to this the clouds nodded and clamored in agreement over some of Edward Hyde’s qualities. Valentine frowned.

“Will you please…” Valentine said in a harsh tone making the clouds go silent. Valentine stood and walked to the fireplace, a fire brightly blazing in the hearth. “I remember what Edward was like. And I remember that it was his fault that Henry died. My biggest concern here is that history tends to repeat itself. I don’t want Holt to be Jackson’s downfall. I figure if Holt is more positively involved in Jackson’s life, he won’t want to ruin it or otherwise…end it. Dig?”

The cloud posse looked amongst themselves when suddenly, Valentine’s phone buzzed. Like a shot, Valentine grabbed the iCoffin to read the text. Much to his delight, the message was from Jackson.

“Meet me at the park by the school just after sunset. We need to talk.” The clouds read over his shoulders.

“Ooh.”

“That sounds bad.”

“Think he’s breakin’ it off?” they said. Valentine glared at them, but re-reading the text wasn’t in the least bit reassuring. It really did sound like Jackson was less than pleased by yesterday night.

As the sun quickly set, Valentine opened his bedroom window and climbed onto the ledge in a crouching position. He leaped as far as he could from the ledge, before morphing into a bat and flitting off towards the park. As he flew, his mind was abuzz with concern. What if Jackson really was planning on ending it? Was that too extreme? He was so unsure, but he knew he needed to do some real kissing up to the boy to make it better.

He soon approached the park just as the sun disappeared behind the trees. He could see Jackson sitting on a small wooden bench table below. The bat dived down nearby and transformed back into his usual slender form. There was a silent pause between them until Jackson turned around and glanced at him. Valentine, slowly walked towards him, taking Jackson’s glance as his cue.

“Mind if I sit down?” Valentine asked as he approached the bench. Jackson shrugged and Valentine took a seat beside him.

“Valentine, I just wanted to talk…you know about last night.” Jackson started. Valentine nodded. “You gave me your word you wouldn’t talk to Holt about us so soon. Last night, he left so many…nasty texts on my phone.” Jackson choked out showing Valentine the series of texts he received, all of them hateful and extremely offensive. Valentine was starting to feel even more hatred towards the crazy blue teen. “I knew this would happen.” Jackson said before turning to Valentine in anger, “But you did it anyway!”

“Jackson, I’m…I’m sorry. I mean, Holt took the news worse than I expected, but I didn’t think he’d pull this.” Valentine explained. Jackson stood up with a sigh. “You’re not…breaking up with me…are you?” Valentine said dropping his accent to show the boy how sincere he was. Jackson, surprised that the vampire was actually using his real voice, looked back at him and sat down.

“No.” Jackson replied. “I mean, I’m mad, but not mad enough to break up with you.” Jackson said reassuringly. “I…I love you, you know?” he said with a smile. Valentine smiled back lacing Jackson’s fingers with his.

“I love you too.” Valentine said, his voice cracking. Jackson chuckled as Valentine cleared his throat. “Sorry, darlin’. My voice isn’t that soothing or romantic.” Jackson laughed and shook his head.

“It’s fine. I like it. It makes me feel like I’m talking to the real you.” Jackson said resting his head on the strong vampire’s shoulder. Valentine leaned his own head on his and smiled.

They sat there staring off into space, just being happy with each other’s company without worrying about Jackson transforming or anyone glaring disapprovingly at them. After a while, it got increasingly darker and the stars came into view above them. Valentine glanced down and saw Jackson starting to fall asleep and shiver. Valentine kissed him gently on the head and petted his dark hair to get his attention. The boy looked up with his groggy blue eyes.

“How did you get here earlier? Your mom drop you off?” Valentine asked. Jackson adjusted his glasses.

“Uh, no. I walked.” He replied. Valentine helped him stand up.

“Come on, I’ll take you home.” Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in his head and he smiled. “Care to take the long way, sugah?” the vampire asked. Jackson shrugged.

“Sure. Why not?” he responded. Then Valentine did something Jackson wasn’t expecting. He took Jackson’s hands in his and held them tightly, his pink eyes fixed on him steadily.

“Now, close your eyes.” Valentine instructed in a soft tone. Jackson looked at him puzzled. “Do you trust me?” Valentine asked. Jackson, almost with no hesitation answered,

“Of course.” Valentine smiled and leaned into his ear.

“Close your eyes.” He whispered, sending shivers down the boy’s spine and he did as he was told. “Now, take a deep breath…” the vampire continued. Jackson took in a deep breath and exhaled. “…whatever you do, don’t let go.” Valentine said pulling Jackson in close to him. Jackson was nervous and very unsure of the vampire’s plan, until he felt as if his feet were lifting off the ground. Slowly at first, until they took off into the sky like a rocket, Jackson clinging to Valentine tightly, his eyes watering. But something felt odd. Valentine somehow felt different.

The boy opened his eyes and looked around. He gasped as he realized the two of them were high off the ground soaring swiftly over the sleepy suburb of New Salem. The cold wind whipped through his hair, and Jackson smiled at the exhilaration. He looked at Valentine, shocked at the sight.

He no longer looked like himself, but rather a large, vicious bat. His face looked normal aside from the elongated fangs and his eyes were brightly glowing. The vampire’s hair was much longer, his entire body covered in long coarse hair, a large set of bat wings keeping them in flight above the city. At this point, Jackson was terrified and just wanted to get down.

“Valentine? Can we maybe land?” He asked. Valentine glanced down at him with a light smile and gave a nod. Once Jackson’s house came into view, Valentine took a dive. Right before it seemed they would hit the ground, Valentine slowed up and morphed back into his normal form, Jackson still clutched to him, eyes shut tight.

“Darlin’, we’re on the ground.” Valentine said. “You can let go, now.” Jackson slowly opened his eyes and looked around, noticing they were in the middle of his driveway. He looked back at Valentine, the vampire’s eyes now relaxed and no longer glowing.

“What…what happened?” Jackson asked. “More specifically, what happened to you up there?” Valentine chuckled.

“That was my half bat form. I rarely ever use it, though. It draws to much attention and it takes a lot outta me.” Valentine explained walking Jackson to the front door.

“Well, other than being mortified by that malicious looking form, flying over the city was actually kinda…kinda cool.” Jackson said. “Anyway, see you tomorrow at school?”

“Of course.” The vampire replied, pulling the boy into a kiss. Jackson felt his face warm and felt as if he would melt right there in his arms. Suddenly, the front door flew open and the boys didn’t have enough time to react and pull out of the kiss before Mrs. Sydney Jekyll stood looking furious in the doorway, the light from inside pouring out and lighting the boy’s frightened faces.

Sydney looked between the boys’ startled faces and said not a word.

“Mom, I can explain-“

“Get in the house this minute, young man! You are in serious trouble!” She said sternly, Jackson hustled inside looking over his shoulder at the stunned vampire on his front porch. Once Jackson was inside, Valentine started to dart off. “Not so fast!” she yelled before Valentine could disappear from her sight. She turned on the porch light, walked out and shut the door, standing face to face with Valentine.
Valentine wanted to look calm and collected, but he was having a hard time.  Sydney was taller than he was and he wasn’t sure just what exactly this angry mother was capable of.

“Who are you and how long has this been going on?” she asked, arms crossed. Valentine sighed.

“My name is Valentine, ma’am. Your son and I have…kinda been seein’ each other for about a month now.” He paused. “Technically speakin’…I’ve been involved with your family since 1881.” He mumbled. Sydney’s arms loosened and her eyes grew wide. Valentine was unsure if her expression was a positive or negative reaction, all he knew was that she must be aware of what he meant.

“Stay away from my son, you hear me.” She said going back inside.

“Wait. What? But I-“

“Listen, the last thing I need is for you steer my son into madness like my grandfather.” She replied, slamming the door right in his face.

Valentine stood there, absolutely speechless.

‘First Holt, now his mother, who else is going to oppose of us bein’ together?’ he thought. Just as he turned around, he saw Bram leaning against a nearby tree, his eyes set dead on him.

“Oh no.” Valentine said softly to himself.
Sorry this one took so long. I think I finally know the direction I want to steer this in.
